Tonight will begin the series between the final two teams in the National Hockey League. While Ice Hockey doesn’t have the following of Basketball, Baseball, and American Football, it is an exciting game to watch at the arena. There, fans can see just how fast the players and puck are moving. The game is so strenuous that the players only stay on the ice for a minute. After that, they go the bench for a rest!
This year, the New York Rangers, who play in Madison Square Garden are in the final for the first time since 1994. Their opponent is the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings are so good they won the championship two years ago..
Both teams had to work very hard to win two prior series to get here. The Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers and then the Montreal Canadians.
The interest in the series is very high and ticket prices are skyrocketing. In order to determine a champion, the teams will play a “Best of 7” series. Another way to state it is that the teams keep playing each other until one wins four games! That has to happen in seven games or less!
To provide balance, the teams will split the games between Los Angeles and Manhattan. Games 1 and 2 will be played in LA. Games 3 and 4 will be played at the Garden in Manhattan. If needed, Game 5 will be in LA, Game 6 back in Manhattan, and then Game 7 back in LA. The reason the first two games are played in LA is that the Kings had a better record in the 82-game regular season than the Rangers did. This is called “home ice advantage”.
The lowest ticket price for Game 3 (Monday, June 9th) is about $1,000. For Game 4 (Wednesday, June 11th)it is $1,600. For Game 6 (Monday, June 16th) it is an astounding $5,500!
